Michael in the Philippines

Earlier this summer I took a trip to the Philippines with my University fellowship. It was a time to reach out to the people of Bustos, Bulucan and Dingalan-and also a time to build relationships with the church there. Our focus was building community in and through Christ Gospel Fellowship in Bustos.

We arrived in Bustos, Philippines, a city of about 60,000, and almost immediately started to spend time with the members of Christ Gospel Fellowship (CGF). The church sponsored us as we arrived and throughout our time in the Philippines as we supported them in their various outreaches and reconstruction projects.

For the first few days of the trip we traveled to Dingalan, where CGF will plant a church to reach out to the farming community. There we looked to connect with the residents of Dingalan by running a day camp-making crafts, singing songs, and telling bible stories.

After returning from the village, we spent the next few days repainting and looking into ways of repairing the church building.  The twenty-year-old building needs a lot of updating; and I felt like I could contribute in this area because of my recent studies in architecture.

During the last few days of the trip our group conducted a seminars for the community and the church members. Because of their desire to start planting churches, our group was able to share our own experiences-coming from a successful church plant in Hong Kong. We talked about the heart of the church and the way that their congregation reaches out to their community.

I was also part of a smaller group that did worship training-a fun and encouraging experience as many of the members of the church are passionate about music and worship.

We started to do a lot of community outreach and in the following days had a “slum feeding program” (the name they give to a sort of food drive); and also a neighborhood BBQ, where we encouraged church members to include their friends and family.

Something that I have been learning and I think was solidified over this trip was that “I’ve seen myself change in perspective. I now see a new side of the Gospel. I see new opportunities. I see that God is chaining and growing me. I see that I am being sanctified. Something I have to realize is that God is changing us all of the time”  and “I think God had been preparing my heart for this trip – tailoring my desires, challenges, relationships, and other aspects of my life for it. My vision for architecture, the self realizations I made with team  members and the future fellowship leaders, and my passion for church planting were all things addressed on the trip”. (From my trip journal).

Time with Friends

I have enjoyed getting to know a new special friend during this spring semester. She and her family moved from Malaysia late last fall. They have three sweet children, one in Maddie’s class and two younger. Our families often get together on Sunday afternoons. Megan enjoys playing with the two younger children, Maddie hangs out with her friend, and Sean and I share life together with Sharon and her husband. Living in China as expatriates can be both challenging and rewarding. The biggest rewards come with forming new relationships.

Mom’s Office Friends

As we close a chapter on another school year, there will be some changes in the office at school where mom works. She has been so blessed to co-labor with a Chinese American lady who grew up in Nanjing, China, in very difficult living conditions. In my World History class this semester, Mrs. Kimmel was a guest lecturer for one of my class periods. I learned from her about many sad things that happened in the course of Mrs. Kimmel’s childhood. In God’s great providence, Mrs. Kimmel married an American man and moved to the US in the late 1980’s. She and her husband became Christians, and after 17 years of living in America, felt a calling to return to her homeland of China. She is a remarkable woman of faith and perseverance. Here is a picture of my mom with Mrs. Kimmel, she is the one wearing glasses. Other ladies pictured are Korean liason/translators and our Chinese school Registrar.

Megan’s Accomplishment

Look what Megan has learned to do while big sisters and daddy are away! Thanks to my sweet friend, Tami, for helping to encourage Megan to take off the training wheels. (I think there was some peer pressure involved too, since Naomi — a year younger than Megan — had learned to ride the day before).

Proud Mommy, (see Naomi in the background, ready to ride)

Rachel and Sean are away on our school’s annual spring trip. Here’s a photo I took of them just before getting on the bus.

Megan’s Special Brunch

Megan is getting some special time with me this week since all the girls and Sean are away. This morning she asked, “Can we have a brunch?” So I made a special egg for her with toast and a fancy lemon water.

Congratulations! Jessie!

Jessie made a run for Student Council Secretary in this year’s student elections. She gave a great speech and won! I am very proud of her sweet heart to serve her fellow classmates in high school.

Megan and Friends

Friday night our school hosted a pizza and movie night for the younger children. With most secondary students away for their annual spring trips throughout China, this was a good opportunity for me to spend some time with Megan and her little friends. Two of my Chinese coworkers from school also brought their children to enjoy the fun. We ended the evening playing on the school playground until dark, then made our way into our offices for some rest. Here’s Megan with two friends:

Notice the background of this pictures is my desk at school. If you look closely you can see one of Jessie’s campaign posters for Student Council Secretary.

Best Friends

Maddie happened to be in coming in from PE class when she saw Jessie’s 10th grade class about board the bus to leave for spring trip.  She ran over to give Jessie a big hug. They are sure going to miss one another this coming week.
